@amivitale for #RainforestAlliance. Brown #bears fight for #salmon in #Katmai Park in #Alaska, whose rivers host the world’s largest population of #sockeye salmon. The native wildlife there is threatened by proposed Pebble Mine, a gold and copper mine strongly opposed by 65% of Alaskan voters and by the Environmental Protection Agency (@epagov) which plans to use its Clean Water Act veto power to stop the mine. The #EPA has estimated that mines, likes the Pebble, could destroy 94 miles of streams and 5,350 acres of wetlands, lakes and ponds. #NikonNoFilter #nofilter #nikon #nikonambassador #amivitale #photojournalism #onassignment @natgeocreative @thephotosociety @nikonusa @natgeo #conservation #FollowTheFrog #IGtakeover

@amivitale for #RainforestAlliance. Welcome to the weird and wonderful world of llamas. Llama-trekking is one of the many activities available in remote parts of #Montana. These beautiful, eccentric creatures have exceptional eyesight which, allied with their periscope-like necks, make them ideal security guards. Strong and gentle, quiet and agile, #llamas are the perfect companion for a pack trip. With their padded foot, cleanliness, calm nature and ability to browse on a variety of vegetation, llamas have no more impact in the high country than a deer. Alert and surefooted, these beautiful Andean natives tote gear with ease through Glacier National Park (@glaciernps). #NikonNoFilter #nofilter #nikon #nikonambassador #amivitale #photojournalism #onassignment @natgeocreative @thephotosociety @nikonusa @natgeo #animals #FollowTheFrog #IGtakeover

@amivitale for #RainforestAlliance. Rhino keepers at the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy (@lewa_wildlife) in #Kenya feed three black baby rhinos - Nicky, Hope, and Kilifi - with bottled milk. Nicky was born blind, Hope's mother was slain by poachers at a nearby conservancy, and Kilifi's mother is blind. It takes about $1,300 every month to care for these young rhinos but with only about 5,500 black #rhinos left in the world, conservationists have to work hard to ensure the survival of each precious individual. #magicalkenya #africa #rhinoceros #conservation #NikonNoFilter #nofilter #nikon #d4 #nikonambassador #amivitale #photojournalism #onassignment @natgeocreative @thephotosociety @nikonusa @natgeo #FollowTheFrog #IGtakeover

@amivitale for #RainforestAlliance. I'm mesmerized by clouds and there were some great formations at Lewa Wildlife Conservancy (@lewa_wildlife) in Northern #Kenya. #Lewa is a globally renowned conservation organization that acts as a catalyst and mode for conservation. I was there telling the stories of indigenous people working to combat poaching and protect the native wildlife. There are solutions and places where people are making a difference through strengthening community. #magicalkenya #africa #conservation #beautiful #NikonNoFilter #nofilter #nikon #d4 #nikonambassador #amivitale #photojournalism #onassignment @natgeocreative @thephotosociety @nikonusa @natgeo #magical #beauty #nature #seetheworld #bestdestinations #FollowTheFrog #IGtakeover

@amivitale for #RainforestAlliance. Women gather firewood in the Melako Conservancy in Northern #Kenya. Although charcoal burning, overgrazing and climate change threaten the environment, the #Melako Conservancy, part of the Northern Rangelands Trust (@nrt_kenya), is a community based organization that develops grazing plans and provides alternative livelihoods to these women so they no longer need to cut down the trees to earn a living. These communities hold the key to saving Africa's great animals. #magicalkenya #africa #conservation #NikonNoFilter #nofilter #nikon #d4s #nikonambassador #amivitale #photojournalism #onassignment @natgeocreative @thephotosociety @nikonusa @natgeo #FollowTheFrog #IGtakeover

@amivitale for #RainforestAlliance. Berhanu Haile loads coffee into a special washing station where the pulp is removed at the Tepi plantation in Kaffe, #Ethiopia. The origination of #coffee goes back to the thirteenth century. Legend says that a herder named Kaldi noticed his goats “dancing” after nibbling bright red berries. Kaldi brought the berries to a nearby monastery where holy men declared they must be the work of the devil and threw them into a fire. Yet, the aroma was too tempting and they quickly raked the roasted beans from the embers, ground them up, and dissolved them in hot water, yielding the world’s first cup of coffee. The culture around coffee in Ethiopia is a serious affair. Here in the USA, we sling it back but after witnessing first hand the tremendous energy and love it takes to get the best beans to market, I came back a changed woman. #NikonNoFilter #nofilter #conservation #nikon #d4 #nikonambassador #amivitale #photojournalism #onassignment @natgeocreative @thephotosociety @nikonusa @natgeo #FollowTheFrog #IGtakeover

@amivitale for #RainforestAlliance. A newborn #Orangutan holds her mother at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center in #Malaysia on the island of #Borneo during a @natgeo wildlife expedition. Only 100 years ago, an estimated 600,000 #orangutans roamed the Borneo and Sumatran rainforests. Now they’re one of the most endangered species in the world due to poaching, habitat destruction, and the illegal pet trade. An extraordinary and dedicated team of at the center rehabilitates orphaned and baby orangutans, training them to survive in the wild. #sepilok #primates #rehabilitation #animals #NikonNoFilter #nofilter #nikon #d4 #nikonambassador #amivitale #photojournalism @natgeocreative @thephotosociety @nikonusa #FollowTheFrog #IGtakeover

@amivitale for #RainforestAlliance. The #gharial, also known as the fish-eating #crocodile, is native to the Indian Subcontinent. Here they are bred inside #Chitwan National Park in #Nepal. The global population is estimated at fewer than 235 individuals because of habitat loss, depletion of fish resources and the use of fishing nets. They once inhabited all the major river systems of the Indian Subcontinent but now are limited to only 2% of their former range and are listed as critically endangered. I was able to see them during a @NatGeo Wildlife Expedition. #animals #NikonNoFilter #nofilter #nikon #d4 #nikonambassador #amivitale #photojournalism #onassignment @natgeocreative @thephotosociety @nikonusa #FollowTheFrog #IGtakeover

@amivitale for #RainforestAlliance. Jimma, the former capital of the region known as Kaffa, is shown in December, 2012 in #Ethiopia. The region is the birthplace of coffee and home to the largest pool of genetic diversity in the world for #coffee. One of the greatest ironies is that most coffee producing countries do not consume their own coffee, and until very recently the very notion of high-quality coffee has been limited to consuming countries in the developed world. Ethiopia is the stunning exception: it boasts the most ancient and the most compelling traditions for coffee consumption that the world has ever seen. Coffee permeates the cultural fabric of Ethiopian life. #NikonNoFilter #nofilter #nikon #d4 #nikonambassador #amivitale #photojournalism #onassignment @natgeocreative @thephotosociety @nikonusa @natgeo #FollowTheFrog #IGtakeover

@amivitale for #RainforestAlliance. Mikeke Bezebih sorts coffee on the Teppi plantation in the Kaffa region of #Ethiopia. Coffee permeates the cultural fabric of Ethiopian life, and is celebrated daily in coffee ceremonies. Families prepare it in the living room using a pan to roast over coals, a mortar and pestle to grind, and a clay pot to boil and brew. The coffee ceremony is at once a social tradition, a celebration of the virtuous properties of coffee, and an opportunity for contemplation and reflection. Coffee is served over a period of time in three individual rounds—the Abol, Tona, and Baraka, each of which has its own specific significance. Life without coffee is almost unimaginable—most people drink it in the morning, the afternoon, the evening, and sometimes late into the night. Ethiopia is one of only two producing countries that drink more than half of what they grow. #NikonNoFilter #nofilter #nikon #d4 #nikonambassador #amivitale #photojournalism #onassignment @natgeocreative @thephotosociety @nikonusa @natgeo #FollowTheFrog #IGtakeover

@amivitale for #RainforestAlliance. A baby #elephant hides under his mother for protection while the others play at Lewa Wildlife Conservancy (@lewa_wildlife) in Northern #Kenya. #Lewa has a fluctuating population of 100 to 400 elephants. They've traditionally used the conservancy as a feeding ground in the dry season, but with rain and weather patterns becoming erratic, many of these elephants have become residents. This puts pressure on Lewa's ecosystem. To help solve this issue, Lewa has worked with a number of stakeholders to open the Mount Kenya elephant corridor, which allows elephant populations to move freely between Lewa, Ngare Ndare & Mount Kenya ecosystems. The corridor allows genetic mixing of elephants and has reduced human-elephant conflict in the area. #magicalkenya #africa #conservation #animals #cute #NikonNoFilter #nofilter #nikon #d4s #nikonambassador #amivitale #photojournalism #onassignment @natgeocreative @thephotosociety @nikonusa @natgeo #magical #beauty #nature #seetheworld #bestdestinations #FollowTheFrog #IGtakeover

@amivitale for #RainforestAlliance. Meet Kamara, one of the inspiring rangers who is currently hand raising three baby #rhinos at at Lewa Wildlife Conservancy (@lewa_wildlife) in #Kenya. Kamara spends 12 hours every day, sometimes in pouring rain, watching over the vulnerable baby rhinos. He calls them his children and once had to fend off a lion who was eyeing one of the baby rhinos. Kamara has raised 10 baby rhinos, 4 cheetahs, 3 giraffes, 3 warthogs, 2 wild buffaloes, 1 lion and 1 serval cat in his 10 years at Lewa. The #Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is the pioneer private rhino sanctuary in East #Africa, established in 1983 to protect the last of #Kenya's black rhinos, whose population had plummeted to near extinction. This is just one of so many stories showing the incredible work of Kenyans who work so hard to protect their wildlife. #magicalkenya #wild #nature #rhinoceros #wildlife #conservation #animals #NikonNoFilter #nofilter #nikon #d4 #nikonambassador #amivitale #photojournalism #onassignment @natgeocreative @natgeo @thephotosociety @nikonusa #FollowTheFrog #IGtakeover
